See What's Happening Now

Good riddance to the old floor. It was nasty.

Here is our empty kitchen and stripped floor. It looks so roomy.

No, the stove isn't working.
We just don't have any place to put it right now.

Another shot of the kitchen, and yes the fridge is still working.
We have to have cold milk and juice!

The Work Begins Monday, May 17th

The work did begin on the 17th, but we had some problems. We had a gutter fall from the side of the house a few weeks ago in a wind storm. Ever since we have had rain pouring into our bedroom windows. Fixing the side of the house took precedence over the kitchen. We now have new weatherboards were there used to be rot, and we will be replacing the gutter and adding a drip edge soon. We have no clue if it will continue to leak until rains.

Back to the kitchen.
The window was removed and just the top half put back.
Another shot of the new look of the window.

Here is an exterior view of the new window.

Look how it fits right into the house as if we always had a smaller window over the sink.

More Before Shots

Here is a close up of the old countertop.

As you can see we needed these bookshelves to hold a lot of stuff.

The kitchen is a mish mash of colors and materials that don't necessarily go together. It was more about trying to make it function rather than form.

Before Pictures

Our kitchen is going to be taken from
Oldy Moldy
to
Magazine Chic.
Watch here to see how it happens.

The window above the sink is a problem. They installed the countertop in front of the window, and there is a space behind the countertop that really shouldn't be there. Then the curtain is an issue because I never knew whether it should fall below behind the countertop or to the edge of it. Anyway, this problem is going to be solved by taking out the bottom part of the window. The new backsplash will be behind the sink,a nd I won't have to have a curtain at all. That curtain was always an isue because it would get splashed constantly.

The cabinets are very dark, and the hardware is dated. The countertop is a faux brick. The backsplash is a white ceramic tile with flecks of color in it.

We used bookshelves on the far wall as pantry, art display, for art books and cookbooks and glassware. They were the catchall for everything that did not fit into the cabinets. The table we bought two summers ago; it was made by David Marsh. We bought it in anticipation of our new kitchen. The chairs are Dutch. They are old, but I don't know if they are antiques. I bought them at Dop's on Jefferson Highway.

A few years ago we bought a potting bench to serve as extra counter space. Steve used it for cooking prep, and it also served as storage. I have always loved it. However, since it is so open it collected a lot of dust. We are going to have a bulit in cabinet in its place. I was sorry to see it go last weekend.
